Dr. Ranajit Das
I am a population and evolutionary geneticist by training with interests in Phylogenetics, Molecular Evolution, Animal Behaviour, Biostatistics, and Computational Biology. The overarching goal for research in my lab is to use population genetic and phylogenetic measures to answer key questions pertaining to reconstruction of phylogenetic history, deciphering ancestral origin of various human and endangered non-human populations using their genomic information and deducing ancestry informative genetic markers (AIMs) to aid in biogeographical, biomedical and forensic studies and preservation of wild fauna.
RUNNING PROJECTS
Investigating the association of host genetic tapestry and the severity of COVID-19 manifestation
We aim to identify genetic variants that show significant variation between COVID-19 patients who are asymptomatic or show mild to moderate symptoms, versus those who show severe manifestations, employing a case-control based approach. And evaluate the likely association between hosts’ genomic ancestry and the severity of COVID-19 manifestation.

Unravelling the population history and assessing the genomic profile of Koraga, an aboriginal tribe from Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka
This study aims to delineate the genomic profile of Koraga community using population genetic approaches to indicate their susceptibility to 22 common human diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, hypertension and various cancers, and to shed light on the ancient genetic origin and migration history of the Koraga population
WE ARE HIRING!
Looking for a potential PhD student with Mathematics/Statistics background
The student should have sound mathematical background. He/she will be working towards developing a novel ancestry determination equation, which will be subsequently translated into a novel and user friendly ancestry-determining software
